Doing Halloween in Style – Stylish Halloween Decorating Ideas

October 28th 2016

It’s that time of year again, when things get a little spooky. But Halloween doesn’t have to equal tacky and plastic — these Halloween decorating ideas are fun, yet still manage to be elegant and stylish.

Ghoulish Glassware

Fill delicate glass bowl with decorative gourds, such as mini pumpkins, for an eye-catching coffee table display. Better still invest in a little eerie elegance with glassware shaped like seasonal fruits or gather together a collection of coloured glass candleholders and create a warming, autumnal glow.

Freaky Foliage

Using floral displays is a great nod to Halloween. Use foliage collected from a blustery walk, such as variegated holly or branches of autumnal leaves and bunch them together in a stylish vase for displaying above the fire. Berries, Chinese lanterns (also known as Physalis) and Acer leaves can all make wonderful garlands to string along the mantle or along a banister.

Lovely Lanterns

Ensure your lighting gets in on the act by stringing up lengths of Halloween-inspired fairy lights. Skulls, tiny pumpkins and glowing bats are all great ideas and are usually battery- powered so can be hung almost anywhere, from the porch to children’s bedrooms. Pop a couple of solar powered pumpkins either side of the front door for a spooky effect without the fire hazard or simply use regular lanterns with an orange pillar candle inside.

Spooky Soft Furnishings

Cushions are one of those fabulous pieces of home décor that can be changed relatively inexpensively and easily, yet can have a huge impact on the look of a room. Think beyond cushions shaped like spiders and novelty pumpkins and opt instead for a range of cushions in autumnal and Halloween colours, such as burnt orange and charcoal, and then perhaps add in a few flourishes in the form of crafty one-off pieces featuring Halloween-inspired motifs.

Fiendish Fabrics

Your use of fabrics in the home can extend way beyond your curtains. Throws, table runners, bunting and seat pads all give the opportunity for expressing some Halloween fun in the home. Fabrics printed with Halloween designs, such as skulls or stars, can add a sense of drama at this time of year, whilst for something a little subtler, hessian holds a rugged sense of the outdoors and looks great combined with any of the above ideas. Lace too, particularly in a shade such as navy, grey or black, carries a gothic feel with it and also happens to be bang on trend at present.

Wicked Wreaths

Whether you choose to hang your wreath on your front door or above your fireplace or sofa, this is a great and über stylish way to inject some Halloween style into your home. Either keep things nice and natural, using autumnal foliage, flowers and berries (real or artificial) or go all-out and create a wreath using branches or wire studded with small Halloween decorations and signs.

If you would prefer not to have plastic Halloween decorations strewn all over your walls, consider creating a simple yet effective Halloween gallery on your wall instead. Using plain black or white picture frames in a variety of shapes and sizes, build up a collection running up a staircase or behind the sofa. Then either simply stick a simple Halloween silhouette directly to the wall behind each frame for an easy-to-dismantle display, or gather together creepy Halloween images from magazines to use as your works-of-art.
