Best indoor plants to display on your coffee table

May 19th 2016

Despite having been notably absent from the world of modern interior design ideas in recent years, indoor plants are back on the scene. Forget dusty 1970s spider plants and use them to brighten up your coffee table décor, enhance your living room furniture — and take comfort in the knowledge that as well as bringing some natural beauty into your home, they also have many health benefits.

A Breath of Fresh Air

The wellbeing benefits of indoor plants go a long way towards explaining why they are now being included in so many modern interior design ideas.

They make the air quality better by releasing oxygen and filtering out pollutants from household baddies, such as formaldehyde. They will also release phytochemicals into the air, quashing mould spores and bacteria.

And, in our centrally heated, airtight modern homes, they also add some much-needed humidity.

Finally, for those with limited or no garden space, they are a way of bringing the outside world in — plus they let you flex your gardening muscles.

Which Plants Are For You?

Depending on your home and preferences, some plants will suit you better than others.

For minimal upkeep, choose plants that thrive in warm environments with little in the way of air movement — such as those with their origins in tropical forests. These include begonias, calatheas and dracaena. All of these will also tie in nicely with the current interiors trend for lively and bold tropical botanical prints and colours.

If your plants are to be placed away from direct sunlight, something like a Cape Primrose could work well, with its vibrant pink or purple blooms, whilst rooms that are flooded with light throughout the day would suit succulents such as The Jade Plant or an Aloe Vera. In rooms with very little light, something that loves shade, such as the Maidenhar Fern are perfect.

Matching Your Plants to Your Interiors

Just like your living room furniture, plants each have their own style and certain plants will suit your home more than others.

Take coffee table decorating, for example.  Waxy, spikey-leafed plants will suit modern coffee tables or very minimalist coffee table designs, whereas round-leaf, trailing plants look great in more rustic, shabby chic living rooms.

Coffee Table Decorating

There are so many ways that you can incorporate indoor plants into your coffee table décor — but the displays you create need to be practical, as well as looking great.

Terrariums are hugely popular right now incorporating glass containers filled with plants — they look great on minimalist coffee table designs and in more classic schemes alike. Plus, being contained makes them a good choice for those with pets or children who might quickly view exposed plants as toys/chews…

Terrarium ideas to put on your coffee table

On modern designs of coffee table, a striking large flowering plant, such as an orchid, will add focus and wow to the room, whilst using a tray as a way of holding several potted plants of varying heights can look stunning, as can a row of herb pots.

Create interest on your coffee table by using other living room accessories, such as a stack of magazines, jugs, chic coffee table books and glass bowls as stands or vessels for your plants.

Finally, if you are wary of your horticultural skills, a vase of fresh cut flowers will have a similarly welcoming, zingy effect on your coffee table — albeit a little less long-lasting.
